December 16: 6:00 PM. – It started to snow. Finally…the first REAL snow of the season and I sat for hours by the window
watching the huge soft flakes drift down from heaven. I love snow!
December 17: – I woke to a beautiful blanket of crystal white snow covering every inch of the landscape. What a fantastic sight! Can there be a more lovely place in the Whole World? Moving to the mountains was the best idea I’ve ever had. Shoveled for the first time in years and felt like the “in shape” volleyball player I once was. I did the driveway and the deck. This afternoon the snowplow came along and closed in the driveway, so got to shovel again. What a perfect life.
December 19: – The sun has melted all the lovely snow. Such a disappointment. My neighbor tells me not to worry, we’ll definitely have a white Christmas. No snow on Christmas would be awful! He says we’ll have so much snow by the end of winter, that I’ll never want to see snow again. I don’t think that’s possible. He is such a nice man I’m glad he’s our neighbor.
December 20: – Snow lovely snow! Two feet last night. The cold makes everything sparkle so. The wind took my breath away, but I warmed up by shoveling the driveway and the deck. This is the life! The snowplow came back this afternoon and buried everything again. I didn’t realize I would have to do quite this much shoveling, but I’ll certainly get back in shape this way. I wish I wouldn’t huff and puff so much. Maybe I need to have my heart checked out.
December 21: – Three feet forecast. Bought two extra shovels and an extra cord of wood for the stove. Stocked the freezer. Maybe I should have generator in case the electricity goes out. I think that’s silly. We aren’t in Alaska, after all. This is the mountains of California.
December 22: – Ice storm this morning. Slipped and fell on my butt on the driveway. Hurt like hell. The neighbor laughed for an hour, which I think was very cruel. The town is very crowded with ski tourists.
December 23: – Still below freezing outside. Roads are too icy to go anywhere. Electricity was off for 5 hours. I had to pile the blankets on to stay warm. Nothing to do but stare out the window at the white stuff. I can’t believe I have to sleep in the living room because that is where the wood stove is.
December 24: – Electricity’s back on, but had another 14″ of the stuff last night. More shoveling. Took all day. Snowplow came by twice. Tried to find a neighbor kid to shovel but they said they were too busy with family stuff. I think they’re lying. Called the only hardware store around to see about buying a snow blower and they’re out. Might have another shipment in March. I think they’re lying. Neighbor says I have to shovel or the town will have it done and bill me. I think he’s lying.
December 25: – Neighbor was right about a white Christmas because 13 more inches of the white stuff fell today, and it’s so cold it probably won’t melt till August. Took me 45 minutes to get all dressed up to go out to shovel and then I had to pee. By the time I got undressed, peed and dressed again, I was too tired to shovel.
December 26: – Only 2″ of snow today. And it warmed up to 32. Teenager wanted money for gas. I said only if helped me shovel the driveway. He got a ride to town.
December 27: – More snow. Snow packed so hard by snowplow, l broke the shovel. Thought I was having a heart attack. I know that the plow guy waits for me to finish shoveling and then he comes down the street at 100 miles an hour and throws snow all over where I’ve just been!
December 28: The idea of shoveling makes my blood boil. God I hate the snow! Then the snowplow driver came by asking for a donation. The neighbor said I have a bad attitude. You think????
December 29: – Still snowed in. Whose idea was it anyway to move back to the mountains?
December 30: – Temperature dropped to 18 degrees and the pipes froze, but at least it is too cold to snow!!!!!!!! Too many people still in town.
December 31 – Made it to grocery store today. Almost hit snowboarder who was snowboarding down the middle of the street. Rolled down my window and said things to him that no 51 year old grandmother should say. Happy New Year.
January 1 – Still snowing. Neighbor is suing me because I refuse to shovel anymore and his dog slipped on my property.
March 20 – Haven’t felt like writing again in my diary until today. I looked up to the sky this morning and yelled, “What the F##*@&K!
March 25: – Set fire to what’s left of the house and deck. No more shoveling. Teenager went to live with his grandmother.
March 27: – Is it summer yet? I finally feel so good. I just love those little white pills they keep giving me. Why am I tied to the bed?
